Mantissa

The decimal part of a logarithm of a number is called mantissa.

Point

It is a dot mark without any dimensions, and has coordinates if considered in a coordinate system.

Line

Which has length but no breadth and height.

Characteristic

The integral part of a logarithm of a number is called characteristic.

Proper Set

It is the power set of the set except the set itself. [2^n - 1]

Power Set

It is the set which contains the subset of the set as elements. [2^n]

Superset

If A is a subset of B, then B is called the super set of A.

Subset

Let us consider two sets A and B, A is said to be a subset of B, if and only if all the elements of A are present in B.

Cardinal of a set

The number of elements present in a set is called the cardinal of a set

Equivalent Set

Two sets are said to be equivalent sets when they have same number of elements.

Objective Case

When a noun is used as the object of the verb, it is said to be in the object or accusative case

Emphatic Pronouns

It will be seen that here compound personal pronouns are used for the sake of emphasis and are therefore called emphatic pronouns

When the action done by the subject turns back (reflects) upon the subject

Superlative Degree

The superlative degree of an adjective denotes the highest degree of the quality, and is used when more than two things are compared.

Comparative Degree

The comparative degree of an adjective denotes a higher degree of the quality than the positive and is used when two things of the same class are compared

Positive degree

The ordinary form of the adjective is called the positive degree

Clause

Such a group of words which forms part of a sentence and contains a subject and a predicate is called a clause

Phrase

Such a group of words, which make sense, but not complete sense is called a phrase

A noun that denotes more than one person is said to be in the plural number.

Tense
Tense means time

Present Tense
A verb that refers to present time is said to be in the present tense

Past Tense
A verb that refers to past time is said to be in the past tense

Future Tense
A verb that refers to future time is said to be in the future tense

Present Continuous Tense
The present continuous tense is used for an action that is still going on or continuing

Present Perfect Tense
The present subject is used to indicate completed activities in the immediate present

Present Perfect Continuous Tense
The present perfect continuous is used for an action which began at some time in the past and is still continuing

Past Continuous Tense
The past continuous is used to denote an action going on at some time in the past

Past Perfect Tense
The past perfect is a verb that shows that the action had been finished before another action in the past

Past Perfect Continuous Tense
The past perfect continuous is used for an action that began before a certain period in the passt and is continued up to that time

Future Continuous Tense
A verb showing an action that will be going on or continue for some time in the future.

Future Perfect Tense
The future perfect is used to talk about actions that will be completed by a certain future time.

Future Perfect Continuous Tense
It is used for actions which will be in progress over a period of time that will end in the future.

Sick Unit


Sick unit refers to a unit whose account has remained substandard for more
than six months or there has been erosion in net worth due to accumulated
cash losses to the extent of 50% of the net worth during the previous
accounting year and the unit has been in commercial production for at least
two years.

Unpaid Cheque


This is a cheque, which is returned ‘unpaid’ (bounced) by the drawee bank.

Fixed Rate of Interest on a loan means that interest rate is fixed for the
entire period of the loan or it may be revised after the first few years
depending upon the terms and conditions of loan.

Dormant / Inoperative Account


A dormant/inoperative account is a savings bank or current account in
which there are no transactions for over a period of two years.

A Demat account refers to dematerialised account and is an account in
which the stocks of investors are held in electronic form.

Non-Fund based facility


Non-fund based facilities are such facilities extended by banks which do not
involve outgo of funds from the bank when the customer avails the facilities
but may at a later date crystallise into financial liability if the customer fails
to honour the commitment made by availing these facilities. Non-fund based
facilities are generally extended in the form of Bank Guarantees, Acceptances
and Letters of Credit.

Micro and Small Enterprises


Micro and Small Enterprises are those enterprises engaged in manufacturing
or rendering services.
A micro enterprise is defined as:
An enterprise engaged in the manufacture or production of goods pertaining
to any industry where the investment in plant and machinery does not
exceed ` 25 lakh
or
An enterprise engaged in rendering services where investment in equipment
does not exceed ` 10 lakh.
A small enterprise is defined as :
An enterprise engaged in manufacture or production of goods pertaining to
any industry where the investment in plant and machinery is more than
` 25 lakh but does not exceed ` 5 crore
or
An enterprise engaged in rendering services where investment in equipment
is more than ` 10 lakh but does not exceed ` 2 crore.

Improper conduct of account


Issuing of cheque on the account without sufficient balance in the account;
frequent returns of inward / outward cheques in the account; account has
been overdrawn, or the account holder has exceeded its agreed credit limit;
non compliance of KYC procedure; fraud/malfeasance or fraudulent
intention exhibited by the customer; suspicious transactions/ engagement
in money laundering activity under the scope of PMLA Act, 2002 etc. are
instances of improper conduct of account.

Floating rate of interest


Floating Rate of Interest on a loan means that interest rate is not fixed
but is linked to Reference Rate and would vary in proportion to the
variations in the latter as per the terms and conditions of loan.

Deposit Accounts


•“Savings deposits” means a form of demand deposit which is subject to
restrictions as to the number of withdrawals as also the amounts of
withdrawals permitted by the bank during any specified period.
• “Term deposit” means a deposit received by the bank for a fixed period
withdrawable only after the expiry of the fixed period and includes
deposits such as Recurring/Short Deposits/Fixed Deposits/ Monthly
Income Certificate/Quarterly Income Certificate etc.
• “Notice Deposit” means term deposit for specific period but withdrawable
on giving at least one complete banking day’s notice.

Deceased account



A Deceased account is a deposit account in which case either the single
account holder has deceased or in case of joint accounts one or more of joint
account holders has/have deceased.

The Electronic Clearing Service (ECS) is an online transmission system

Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) is a scheme introduced by RBI to help
banks to offer their customers facility of transfer of funds from account to

Nomination Facility

locker, in the event of death of the hirer.

Non Performing Asset


A Non Performing Asset (NPA) is a loan or an advance where
i) interest and/ or installment of principal remain overdue for a period of
more than 90 days in respect of a term loan.
ii) the account remains ‘out of order’ in respect of an Overdraft/Cash
Credit (OD/CC).
iii) the bill remains overdue for a period of more than 90 days in the case
of bills purchased or discounted.

Net worth


Net worth means sum of Capital and free reserves minus accumulated
losses.

National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) system is a nation-wide funds
transfer system to facilitate transfer of funds from one bank branch to any
other bank branch in the country.
